ReD Global offers a full-time Erasmus Mundus Joint Master. In the two-year master’s programme, our students earn 120 ECTS credits throughout four semesters. Upon successful completion, you will earn a master’s degree from both your first and second-semester European host universities, culminating in a prestigious Double Degree.

First Semester

Students spend the first semester at University of Groningen, The Netherlands.

Second Semester

You move to either the Universidad de Córdoba (Spain) or Universidade de Coimbra (Portugal) for your second semester (you indicate your preference for a second semester host with your application to ReD Global).

Third Semester

For the third semester, you choose to follow a “Research Track” or a “Professional Track”:  students who choose the Research Track follow courses at one of the ReD Global Partner Institutions; students who choose the professional track will do an internship at one of the ReD Global non-Academic Associated Partners or at a professional organisation of their choice and relevant to their study.

Fourth Semester

You dedicate your fourth and final semester to the writing of your thesis, as well as a PhD proposal or policy paper, based on your choice for the third semester.

Please note that all students must spend a minimum of two semesters in two countries, which must be different from the country of residence at the time of enrolment. This is a clause applicable to students who live in Spain, Portugal, or the Netherlands at the time of enrolment; please contact the Secretariat if you want to know more about what this means for your programme.

The supervisors advise you on PhD proposal or policy paper writing, but this does not guarantee a PhD position at the university.

The Research track look as follows

In designing the curriculum, the ReD Global team has applied a three-levelled approach to maximise synergies and complementarity across semesters.

Semester 1

  1. Focus: Foundational courses theories & methods in the study of religions
  2. Disciplinary perspective: History, Anthropology, Sociology
  3. Period: Antiquity, contemporary

Semester 2

  1. Focus: Foundational courses theories & methods in the Middle Ages, Humanism & early-modern history, incorporating and applying knowledge and skills on study of religions acquired in Semester
  2. Disciplinary perspective: History, Philosophy, Philology
  3. Period: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Early Modern, Contemporary (via Learning Progression Route)

Semester 3

  1. Focus: Religious Diversity & Social Inclusion in multifarious contexts
  2. Disciplinary perspective: Trans-/interdisciplinary: e.g., Sociology, Political Science, Philosophy, Anthropology, Economics; each Research Track-Partner Institution defines a profile for 3rd semester offer with a distinctive “local flavour”
  3. Period: Contemporary, building on historical knowledge and skills acquired during 1st year

Semester 4

  1. Focus: Thesis work (in any case co-supervised by 1st and 2nd semester hosts)
  2. Disciplinary perspective: To be defined in consultation with supervisors
  3. Period: Historical + contemporary; students define focus, but in all cases need to link the historical with the contemporary (and vice versa)

The Professional Track looks as follows

  2. Disciplinary perspective: To be defined in consultation with supervisors
